Senior running back Bryan McGinley scored on a one-yard run with 1:17 to play as Garden Grove High School rallied for a 19-14 win over Santiago Friday night in a Garden Grove League game at Jayson Field.
McGinley’s burst up the middle capped a three-touchdown final period which boosted the Argonauts’ record to 2-0, 2-5, while Santiago fell to 0-2, 1-6.
Santiago led, 14-0, entering the final period but a pair of Argonaut touchdowns in a span of 2:26 pulled Garden Grove to within two points. The Argonauts’ first score came on 6-play, 34-yard drive, following a Cavalier fumble as quarterback Henry Fournier scored on a one-yard run.
After forcing Santiago into a quick kick on its next possession, Garden Grove struck quickly with trick play. Junior wide receiver Zany Rawls took a pitch from Fournier, rolled right and found the quarterback open downfield for a 38-yard touchdown pass and the Argonauts’ first completion of the night.
The Cavaliers held on the two-point conversion attempt and still led, 14-12.
Garden Grove again forced a punt on the next series and began the winning drive on the 50-yard line. On fourth down and seven from the Cavalier 46, Fournier picked up his first completion, a 21-yard gain to running back Nick Huerta for a first down.
Seven plays later, five of them runs by McGinley, the Argonauts scored the game winner.
For the game, Santiago nearly outgained the Argonauts in total offense-231 yards to 229, but in the final 12 minutes, Garden Grove picked up 101 total yards to Santiago’s five.
