PROVIDENCE — Rep. Fernand J. St Germain, the House Banking Committee chairman, won a 14th term in the 1st District despite a House ethics probe into his personal finances. St Germain defeated Republican John A. Holmes Jr.
In September of 1985, the Wall Street Journal reported that St Germain, 58, had received investment help from people and institutions that benefited from his official actions as Banking chairman. The House ethics committee has been investigating the matter.
Republican Edward DiPrete, who in 1984 became the first GOP governor elected by the heavily Democratic state in 16 years, was reelected. DiPrete defeated millionaire Democrat Bruce G. Sundlun.
Voters rejected the proposed ban on state-funded abortions.
