COLUMBIA — Republican Rep. Carroll A. Campbell Jr. defeated Democratic Lt. Gov. Michael Daniel in the race for governor in early returns and Democratic Sen. Ernest F. Hollings won reelection easily.
Hollings, a 1984 presidential aspirant who has served in the Senate for two decades, had faced his best-financed opponent in years in former U.S. Atty. Henry D. McMaster.
Campbell gave up his congressional seat to face Daniel in the race to succeed Dick Riley, a popular Democrat, who was the first governor in the state to serve two consecutive four-year terms. State law barred Riley from running again.
Campbell, 46, argued that Democratic dominance of state government had led to mismanagement and that education reforms weren’t fully funded. Daniel, also 46, said Democrats had led South Carolina to landmark advances in education and improved economic development.
