The federal government has failed to adequately identify, manage and clean up radioactive and hazardous waste at the Hanford plutonium production facility, congressional investigators said. The General Accounting Office report said the Department of Energy is not bringing the nuclear reservation near Richland, Wash., into compliance with state and federal hazardous waste laws. Rep. Mike Synar (D-Okla.), who requested the report, said it supports his view that “DOE has an abysmal track record in managing its waste.”
