El Segundo : Light-Rail Report Certified

The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission last week certified the final environmental impact report for the El Segundo light-rail project and decided that a section along Nash Street should be at street level rather than elevated as city officials had wanted.
But while no environmental roadblocks emerged, the commission has not yet approved the project. The commission on Dec. 17 will decide which of many routes proposed for a 150-mile light-rail line will be built with revenues from a half-cent sales tax.
The 2.9-mile El Segundo line would run from Compton Boulevard in Hawthorne to Imperial Highway in El Segundo and hook up with a Century Freeway line.
The commission said the Nash Street section could still be elevated if the city or private companies raised the additional $8 million it would cost.
City officials, who say Nash Street is already congested, have said that the city does not have the money for to elevate the line.
