Manhattan Beach : Preservation Estimate Soars

The City Council voted 4 to 0 to continue with plans to relocate a historically significant house on 15th Street despite staff estimates that moving and renovation will cost almost $70,000 more than the council allocated.
The council allocated $20,000 on Nov. 11 to move the house from 205 15th St., where new housing is to be built. A staff report this week places the cost at nearly $90,000.
Council members expressed hope that the community would rally behind the project and donate materials and labor to reduce costs.
The 1,100-square-foot cottage, built in 1907, is one of the oldest in Manhattan Beach, according to Michele Memmott, a city parks and recreation commissioner, who has urged the council to save the house. Proposals call for using it as a children’s museum or a historical society annex.
The city would move the house to a temporary location until a permanent site is selected by the Parks and Recreation Commission, which is planning to discuss the project Monday.
