MOSCOW — Five Soviet children died and 60 became ill after a nanny at a factory child care center in the Ukraine accidentally put sodium nitrite in their soup, the trade union daily Trud said today.
The newspaper said the children, up to 7 years old, started vomiting and their faces turned blue after the nanny mistook the lethal substance for salt when she was preparing lunch.
A worker had brought the sodium nitrite into the kitchen, thinking that it was a chemical used to clean pots and pans, Trud said.
