A boy was hit by a car and fatally injured Monday evening when his skateboard slid from beneath him and he apparently ran into a traffic lane to retrieve it, police said Tuesday.
The victim--identified by the county coroner’s office as Donald Fife, 13, of Santa Ana--was treated by Fire Department paramedics and then taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, officers said.
The youth was declared dead at 6:18 p.m., police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said.
The boy was riding his skateboard in the 2400 block of east Santa Clara Avenue when his skateboard slid out from under him, Thomas said. She said the youth ran into the street and stooped to grab his skateboard when a car came over a bridge crossing the Costa Mesa Freeway and struck him.
The driver, a 31-year-old Santa Ana woman, was not cited or held pending further investigation, Thomas said.
