Kilauea Volcano’s lava flow is easing as blockage develops in channels through which the molten rock flows, and the threat to eight homes in Kalapana, Hawaii, has subsided, scientists said. The lava had been pouring from a vent into a narrow channel that feeds into tube-like channels inside the cooled crust of the original flow, which now stretches seven miles to the sea. Meanwhile, Kalapana will ask Gov.-elect John D. Waihee III, who will take office next year, to declare the community a disaster area, qualifying residents for low-cost loans.
