KODIAK, Alaska — In a daring rescue, a Coast Guard helicopter carefully timed its movements with the motion of the waves to pluck two fishermen to safety from atop 30-foot swells.
Calling Friday’s rescue “extremely dangerous,” Petty Officer Glenn Rosenholm said the crew was forced to undertake the risky maneuver because the aircraft’s basket hoist was broken.
The fishermen, from the southeast Alaska community of Sitka, had radioed that their boat was taking on water and in danger of capsizing west of Kodiak Island.
