NEW YORK — The race is far from over, but NBC News now can claim to have the top-rated evening newscast. In the final 13 weeks of the year, NBC nipped CBS in the A.C. Nielsen Co. ratings for the first time since the 1960s.
“I think it means that a lot of hard work is paying off,” said Bill Wheatley, executive producer of NBC “Nightly News” since mid-1985.
NBC’s average rating in the fourth quarter was 11.8, with a 22% share of the audience. CBS was right behind at 11.6 and a 21 share; ABC averaged 10.6 and a 20 share.
