The U.S. said it plans to fine Shell $180 million.

The Energy Department said it plans to settle charges of oil price-control violations with Shell Oil Co. for $180 million, one of the last price cases still outstanding. The settlement would cover $160 million of alleged crude oil violations from the pre-1981 period, when oil price and allocation controls were in effect, and $20 million in alleged refined-product violations from the same period. The oil company said: “Shell continues to maintain that it has fully complied with all applicable regulations.”
