SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres today asked waivers on imprisoned pitcher LaMarr Hoyt for purposes of his unconditional release.
A statement read by team spokesman Bill Beck said it is the club’s position that Hoyt, serving a prison sentence for drug possession, has materially breached his contract. “LaMarr was aware of the club’s policy and had been previously warned about the situation,” Padres General Manager Jack McKeon said. If Hoyt is unclaimed by another team by Monday, he would become a free agent.
