‘Boost for the Best’

I read the editorial (Dec. 19), “Boost for the Best,” and though I agree that federal officeholders and top appointed officials deserve decent salaries, I do not believe we need to use the private sector as a measuring rod of appropriate salaries. The salaries in the private sector are unreasonably high.
I believe congressmen and senators are hard-working, dedicated people and that they deserve higher salaries than they are presently receiving. However, I do not feel it is altogether fitting and proper to increase the salaries unless, at the same time, we make it a priority to take care of our poor and homeless.
I realize that we are operating at a huge deficit. However, I believe we could raise the salaries and take care of the poor and homeless by reducing our defense budget.
