PEKING — China is setting up a special breeding center for pandas in the central province of Sichuan, the native habitat of the endangered animals, the New China News Agency said Wednesday. Experiments on breeding pandas in captivity will be conducted at a 15-acre center in Chengdu, it said.
The agency said that since 1980, 17 pandas have been born in the Chengdu Zoo, 11 of which have survived. It said that both artificial insemination and natural mating have been successful in raising the animals in captivity.
