The House passed and sent to the Senate legislation to give national historic trail status to the Santa Fe Trail, once a main route to the Southwestern frontier. Between 1822 and 1880, the 950-mile trail between Missouri and New Mexico was one of America’s most important commercial routes as well as a major military and governmental link with the Southwest, according to the House Interior Committee.
