Pasadena : NAACP Unit to Vote Again

The national office of the NAACP has ordered its Pasadena chapter to resolve a contested election by holding a new election April 12 to settle a dispute between the two candidates for president.
The controversy began after incumbent Stephen Mack defeated John Kennedy by only four votes in the Dec. 14 election. Kennedy challenged the results, saying the polls were closed two hours early and some votes of eligible members were not counted. In February, the national office of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People ruled the election invalid.
The chapter will hold a general membership meeting April 4 at the Jackie Robinson Center to nominate candidates, said Nathaniel White, president of the central area of the NAACP. White has been appointed to officiate the new election.
In addition to electing a president, NAACP chapter members will also elect a vice president, secretary and treasurer, since all the results in the December election were invalidated.
Meanwhile, a hearing on a lawsuit filed by Charles B. Johnson to validate the December election and declare Mack the winner is scheduled for April 8 in Los Angeles Superior Court. If the judge rules in his favor, the April 12 election would be canceled, Johnson said.
