A four-day spring storm over the Plains that smothered highways in 12-foot snowdrifts and drenched farmlands with rain abated as beleaguered road crews, travelers and ranchers awaited a cold weekend. Meanwhile, heavy thunderstorms saturated parts of central and northern Florida and threatened flooding throughout the region. More severe weather in the form of cold arctic air was forecast for the Midwest, where the earlier winter storm had prompted hay lifts to feed stranded cattle in Kansas and closed roads in three states.
