The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. William J. Crowe Jr., has informed Congress that an aircraft carrier will be stationed permanently in the Indian Ocean region as a continuing show of force during the present tense situation in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. officials said. The officials, who asked not to be named, said the policy change follows a U.S. warning to Iran not to interfere with shipping in the strait, at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. The carrier Kitty Hawk, which has been in the region since January, currently is patrolling the northern Arabian Sea, the officials said.
