Baby M’s first birthday today will be trying and emotional for the surrogate mother fighting to reclaim the daughter she bore under contract to a childless couple, her lawyer said. Mary Beth Whitehead is disappointed that she remains separated from Baby M a year after her birth, lawyer Harold Cassidy said in Hackensack, N.J., where Superior Court Judge Harvey Sorkow is expected to rule next week on the validity of the contract and custody of the child.
