Paul Peters of Santa Ana Valley High School has run everything from sprints to hurdles to the 1,600 relay this season. But Saturday at the Mt. San Antonio Relays in Walnut, he became a specialist.
Peters, running just one race, won the invitational 400 meters in 47.34 seconds--a 1987 Southern Section best. Patrick Rowe of San Diego Lincoln finished second in 48.18 and Nick-John Haiduc of Servite third in 48.60.
“I had people to push me,” said Peters, who had previously run 49.01 at this season’s Valencia Invitational and had a personal best of 48.9 last season. “The competition was tough.”
Peters was the only Orange County winner at Saturday’s meet. Kaleaph Carter of Edison did break the 60-foot mark in the shotput with a toss of 60-10 3/4 to finish third behind Kamy Keshmiri of Reno (63-11 1/2) and Shane Collins of Bozeman, Mont. (63-0).
Haissam Sabra of Ocean View ran 3:56.11 in the 1,500 to finish second to Moreno Valley’s Raul Serratos (3:55.95), and Marc Kallick of Marina took second in the invitational 110-meter high hurdles in 15.01, two-hundredths of a second behind Willie Henry of Arroyo Grande.
