Crippled by slow sales of the Chevrolet Nova, New United Motor Manufacturing will slash car production at its Fremont, Calif., plant. NUMMI, the joint venture between General Motors and Toyota, said it will reduce production of Nova subcompacts from 1,800 units a day to 750 daily, effective May 18. The joint venture will continue to operate on two shifts, and no layoffs are planned. Fremont’s production of Toyota’s FX and FX 16 models, meanwhile, will remain unchanged at the rate of 150 units per day.
