A 19-year-old San Diego man was killed Sunday in what appears to be a gang-related shooting near 24th Street and Island Avenue, police said.
Gerardo Ortiz was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. at Physicians & Surgeons Hospital from two gunshot wounds, according to police spokesman Sgt. Jim Wallace. Rebecca Myers, 18, also of San Diego, suffered a bullet wound to the leg. She was treated at Kaiser Hospital and released.
Wallace said the drive-by shooting apparently occurred at 1:10 a.m. when a car stopped in the 400 block of 24th Street and its occupants fired numerous shots at a group standing in the parking lot of Sherman Elementary School.
The motive for the shooting is unknown, but it is under investigation by the Police Department’s gang unit as well as homicide detectives, Wallace said.
