Authorities ordered a “red alert” for military units in Manila after receiving reports that disgruntled troops and deserters will make another coup attempt, news reports said. The military said that dissident soldiers suspended plans for a coup after the plot was publicized but that the military remained on alert. The government of Philippine President Corazon Aquino has survived at least five military coup attempts or revolts in its 14 months in office. In another development, 20 armed men killed Jimmy Matalam, a congressional candidate from a party that supports Aquino, and a soldier in an attack in Mindanao Island.
