Rudolf Hess observed his 93rd birthday in West Berlin’s Spandau Prison as more than 500 people gathered outside in demonstrations for and against efforts to parole Adolf Hitler’s one-time deputy. Seven people were arrested for carrying Nazi emblems that are banned under West German law. Several called for Hess’ release. But most demonstrators opposed efforts to free the ailing Hess, who was sentenced to life imprisonment at the 1946 Nuremberg war crimes trials.
