A fire of suspicious origin raced through the landmark Union Station in Providence, R.I., and firefighters feared that the 93-year-old downtown building, scheduled to be part of a multimillion-dollar commercial and residential complex, could not be saved. Heavy, black smoke billowed out of the yellow brick building, as wind-whipped flames consumed the roof. The old former train station has been boarded up since the city’s Amtrak station was moved last year. No injuries were reported.
