Ella Fitzgerald will be awarded the UCLA Medal for her musical achievements at the university’s commencement ceremonies June 14, the university announced Tuesday. The 69-year-old “First Lady of Song” and two others will be given the medal, which is UCLA’s highest honor to people “whose achievements are of such significance to merit recognition by the campus.” The honor, established in 1979, also will be bestowed on abstract painter Richard Diebenkorn, a Santa Monica artist whose works are displayed nationwide, and on John W. Ryan, the president of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
