David Mattina, a Biloxi, Miss., nightclub owner, said Wednesday he’ll drop the name Oscar’s and eliminate the Oscar statuette and other trademark references in his bar because the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences “is a lot bigger than me.” Attorneys for the academy notified Mattina two weeks ago that the organization owns all Oscar reproduction rights, and demanded that Mattina stop using them in the dance club. “They wanted us to cease and desist from use of the Oscar on signs, shirts, glassware and all souvenirs in general--napkins, matches, the whole deal,” Mattina said. He added that there’s another expense he’ll incur that won’t have much to do with his business: His Mercedes 380SL has a personalized license plate that reads OSCARS.
