Lomita : School District Discussion
A public meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at City Hall to discuss the State Board of Education’s refusal last month to call an election on a proposal to set up an independent school district.
Councilman Robert Hargrave, head of a group that wants Lomita to take over the three Los Angeles Unified School District campuses in the city, said several options will be reviewed at the meeting, including asking other nearby districts to annex Lomita’s schools or trying to get other communities in the Los Angeles district interested in local administration of schools.
Hargrave’s committee contends that the giant Los Angeles district does not give adequate attention to the needs of its schools in Lomita. Los Angeles and state officials argue that loss of the Lomita schools would lead to increased racial segregation in the district and possibly prompt court intervention.
