Monterey Park : New Housing Ordinance
The City Council has approved an ordinance that will require multifamily housing to undergo the same architectural review process the city has been using for office and commercial buildings.
The new ordinance gives the city control over the building design, materials, color, landscaping and signs used in all commercial projects and in multifamily developments such as apartments and condominiums.
The current Architectural Review Board for stores and offices will be replaced by two design review boards. One board will review all projects in commercial zones, and the other will have jurisdiction over multifamily housing.
The ordinance specifies that three of the seven members of each panel be architects, landscape architects or urban planners. People interested in serving on the boards may apply at the city manager’s office.
