Cal State Northridge, the No. 1-ranked softball team in Division II, will be after its sixth straight NCAA West Regional championship when it begins playoff action today at Cal State Sacramento.
The Lady Matadors (52-6) will face Sacramento (34-19) and UC Davis in the three-team, double-elimination tournament, with the winner advancing to the national championship tournament May 15-17 in Quincy, Ill.
Northridge is 2-0 against Davis this season and 1-0 against Sacramento. CSUN has five regulars batting better than .300--led by Priscilla Rouse, who has a school-record average of .440--and four pitchers with a combined earned run average of 0.48.
Sacramento will play Davis at noon today in the tournament’s opening game. Northridge plays the loser of that game at 2:30 and the winner at 5 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., with a second game to follow, if needed.
Delanee Anderson (15-2, 0.52 ERA) will start the first game for Northridge and Debbie Dickman (18-3, 0.55) will pitch the second game. If the Lady Matadors make it to the championship game, Lisa Martin (10-1, 0.45) will pitch, with Dickman getting the start if another game is needed.
