The Los Angeles Times has been named recipient of the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award in a nationwide competition for “the best newspaper travel section.”
Judges of the contest at the University of Missouri Journalism School made these observations:
“Readers of the Los Angeles Times Travel Section are treated to a broad and interesting content. Every week The Times takes its readers all over the world, but at the same time it doesn’t neglect its home.
“The articles are well-written and well-edited. They routinely and importantly include key consumer information. And, like few other travel sections, The Times has a letters to the editor column, which gives the section a personal touch. The section offers excellent photographs in color on the cover.”
The award will be accepted by The Times at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., May 19 from the Society of American Travel Writers, which sponsors the contest. Judges named the Chicago Tribune as runner-up.
