Foggy Experience

The article about thick fog at Los Angeles Airport (April 19) brought back this memory from 1955:
We were living in Pasadena. I chose a United flight out of the L.A. Airport for a day trip to San Diego. All went well at time of departure, but that evening the San Diego Airport was “socked in,” and we were taken by bus to Miramar Naval Air Station where the inbound United flight had landed.
After takeoff, we learned that L. A. Airport was closed by fog. We landed at Lockheed. Those of us who had left our cars at L. A. Airport were taken back there by bus.
I returned, partly through dense fog, to Pasadena, reflecting as I drove that I either should have used Lockheed in the first place or driven to San Diego and back--no more time would have been consumed had I driven. Perhaps not many flights were available at that time to and from San Diego.
