Try Another Route

Regarding Michele and Tom Grimm’s May 3 article, I would like to make an alternate suggestion. Rather than joining California 1 northbound at San Luis Obispo, I suggest that travelers continue north on U.S. 101 to Salinas and California 86 west to Monterey. Then on the return trip take California 1 south from Monterey to S.L.O. and rejoin U.S. 101.
When traveling north on California 1 we find that we are constantly looking back to see the magnificent scenery. When we travel south on California 1 we find that the coastline and mountains on the east side of the highway open out in front of us as we drive along, and that is much more enjoyable than constantly looking back over our shoulders.
