A teen-ager on probation for burglary was arrested on suspicion of murder in the fatal stabbing and bludgeoning of Bernadette Riley, 77, in her Rosemead home. Mrs. Riley, the widow of a police officer, was found dead at her house in the 3900 block of Ivar Avenue. Sheriff’s deputies found her car abandoned and smeared with blood about six blocks from her home. They traced its license plates to the home, where the murder was discovered. Officers cordoned the area and discovered the suspect hiding in a tree about half a mile away. Deputies said the 17-year-old, who was not identified because of his age, lived nearby.
