Isabel Rogers, a professor at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va., was narrowly elected to lead the nation’s largest Presbyterian denomination. Rogers defeated the Rev. Joan Salmon Campbell in the fifth ballot by the commissioners to the 199th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Biloxi, Miss. The vote was 325 to 323. Rogers replaces the Rev. Benjamin Weir, a former hostage in Lebanon, who was not eligible for a second one-year term.
