The judge in the Bernhard H. Goetz trial reread his instructions to the jury, making changes a defense lawyer said would help to defend Goetz in the shooting of four teen-agers on a Manhattan subway. The sequestered jurors failed to reach a verdict after nearly nine hours of deliberations. They will resume their deliberations Monday. Earlier, the jury asked acting state Supreme Court Justice Stephen Crane to reread his instructions on second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault. In his revised instructions, Crane told the jurors they could consider the testimony of Dr. Bernard Yudowitz, a neurologist, who said that in a stressful situation, “the mind might go on automatic pilot” and the body might act by reflex.
