20-Kiloton Nuclear Weapon Detonated

YUCCA FLAT, Nev. — Scientists conducted a “picture-book” test of a 20-kiloton nuclear weapon beneath the Nevada Test Site on Thursday.
The 8:20 a.m. explosion, the seventh acknowledged test of the year, had an equivalent yield of less than 20,000 tons of TNT. The experiment, code named “Brie,” was of a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory weapon buried 665 feet beneath the surface at Yucca Flat.
“It was a picture-book test,” a Department of Energy spokesman said.
The government agency said no radiation leaked or seeped into the atmosphere and the earth movement was not felt at the control point 18 miles from Ground Zero.
