Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel posted a $39-million profit for the second quarter compared to a $60-million loss a year ago. Because it is operating under bankruptcy court protection, the Wheeling, W. Va., company said results do not include $12.3 million in interest expenses that would otherwise have accrued on its loans. The company said that while steel shipments have declined, steel prices have increased. Quarterly sales rose 5.5% to $245.3 million.
