Fritz Holt; Co-Producer of Broadway Production of ‘La Cage Aux Folles’

MONTCLAIR, N.J. — Fritz Holt, who co-produced such Broadway successes as “La Cage Aux Folles” and the revival of “Gypsy” starring Angela Lansbury, has died. He was 46.

Holt died Tuesday of complications from pneumonia, according to Shirley Herz, a spokeswoman for “La Cage Aux Folles.”

Holt, born George William Holt III in San Francisco, produced most of his shows with Barry Brown. They were executive producers of “La Cage,” their biggest hit. The musical begins its fifth year on Broadway next month.

Among the other shows Holt and Brown presented in New York were the musical “Platinum” starring Alexis Smith, a revival of Kaufman and Ferber’s “The Royal Family,” and two comedies, “Wally’s Cafe” and “Saturday, Sunday, Monday.” Their last show was “Wildfire,” a psychological drama starring Diana Rigg, which had a brief run in London last year.

The “Gypsy” revival opened on Broadway in 1974 and won Lansbury one of her four Tony Awards.

Holt, a graduate of the University of Oregon, began his theater career as an assistant stage manager for the Mineola, N.Y., Playhouse. He later was hired by Harold Prince to work in the same capacity on the touring company of “Cabaret.”

Holt also directed several theater benefits, including a 1985 Metropolitan Opera House benefit for sufferers of acquired immune deficiency syndrome and last month’s 100th birthday salute to director George Abbott, held at the Palace Theater in New York for the Actors’ Fund of America.

Holt is survived by his parents and a sister. Funeral arrangements were not complete.
