Frugal Gourmet, driven by Trevor Ritche, held off late-charging Laag to win the $902,000 Meadowlands Pace by a neck Friday at East Rutherford, N.J., as favored Jate Lobell came in seventh, the worst finish of his career.
Jate Lobell, who did not win for just the third time in 26 career races, started back in the pack and never challenged. He had never finished worst than second in any previous start.
Frugal Gourmet paid $14.80, $5.80 and $5 in covering the mile in 1:52.
