Upon checking into the Hotel Bernerhof in Interlaken, Switzerland, I was told by a happy owner that my recommendation of the Bernerhof which appeared in Jerry Hulse’s Travel Tips last October resulted in several new guest registrations during the past year. The Bernerhof still serves the best breakfasts, gratis with rooms, in Switzerland.
I am writing from sunny Zermatt to report that all the mountain trails are open, and with delightful open-air restaurants stretching from the valley floor to the toe of the Matterhorn, there’s not a hungry hiker to report.
The best bargain is the Glacier Tea Room near the post office, which offers beefburgers for $3 and goulash soup for $3.50. The friendly owners, Manuela and Sarah Perren, provide breakfast, lunch and dinner specialties every day except Sunday.
As a shopping note: Those sweat shirts emblazoned with “Matterhorn--Zermatt” bear inside labels which read “Made in the U.S.A.”
