The Ugly American Has Taken Up Tennis

The ugly American is alive and well, and playing Davis Cup tennis for the United States. Never have I been so ashamed of American athletes, and American fans, as I was watching their disgraceful display last weekend.
We condemned the fans of Mexico and Paraguay for their unsportsmanlike conduct during previous Davis Cup rounds, and darned if we didn’t do the very same contemptuous thing. Absolutely inexcusable.
I never thought I would root against the United States, but I did. I’m glad the West Germans won.
