Old Indian Village Razed by Bulldozer

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — A bulldozer operator unknowingly destroyed an unmarked 800-year-old Indian village that archeologists had hoped would provide a rare glimpse into pre-European American culture.
The 5.5-acre site was one of the last known villages that existed just before the Pilgrims arrived in 1620, historical officials said Friday.
The site is half a mile from Plymouth Rock in a hollow surrounded by farmland. A developer had kept the site separate from a planned development and hired archeologists to conduct a dig.
But, two months ago, a subcontractor hired by developer Robert Thompson accidentally graded the area, officials disclosed Friday. They said the site had been left unmarked because archeologists feared looting.
