L.A. Gear won the right to use its name on clothing and shoes in a ruling made by a New York federal judge. The victory for the Los Angeles footwear maker is part of a 1 1/2-year-long legal battle with New York-based Gear Inc., licensor of children’s clothing and furniture, which claimed L.A. Gear had stolen its name. A Sept. 28 trial date has been set to decide whether L.A. Gear can use its name on handbags and luggage and to argue its countersuit against Gear Inc.
