The State - News from Aug. 4, 1987

Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy proclaimed a state of emergency in Alpine County after a brush fire south of Lake Tahoe destroyed at least 15 homes and damaged several others, charring nearly 7,000 acres. The fire began Wednesday on federal property near Woodfords and was contained Sunday evening. McCarthy said his proclamation will allow residents whose homes must be rebuilt to retain their existing property tax assessments, rather than having the rebuilt structures assessed as newly erected buildings.
