Fletcher Is Among 24 to Advance in Surfing

Christian Fletcher, 16, of San Clemente, was the youngest of the 24 surfers who advanced Monday on the first day of the Ocean Pacific Pro Surfing Championships at Huntington Beach.
Mike Cruikshank of Dana Point, Darren Brilhart and John Parmenter of Huntington Beach, Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach, George Hulse of Capistrano Beach, Chris Burke of San Clemente and Scott Crumb and Richie Collins of Newport Beach also were among those to advance.
The 24, who competed in four- to six-foot surf, moved into today’s second round, which starts at 6:30 a.m. The competition will end Saturday.
