Dave Kingman says he plans to leave the Triple-A Phoenix Firebirds after tonight’s Pacific Coast League game and pursue business interests as his hopes of making a major league baseball comeback have faded.
Kingman, 38, has a .207 batting average with 2 home runs and 11 RBIs since joining the Firebirds on July 11.
The 6-foot 6-inch, 210-pound first basesman-designated hitter had hoped to be picked up by a major league club and resume his quest for 500 home runs. He has hit 442 in his 16-year major league career.
Kingman, who played the last three seasons with the Oakland Athletics before becoming a free agent in November, said has gotten no offers “that amount to anything.”
