MANAMA, Bahrain — The third convoy of reflagged Kuwaiti tankers and U.S. warships arrived safely at its destination off Kuwait today, U.S. officials said.
In Washington, the Pentagon issued a statement saying, “The voyage from the central Persian Gulf was quiet and without incident.”
The Townsend, the Gas Queen and the Gas Princess were accompanied on the final leg of the transit by the destroyer Kidd, the cruiser Hawes and the frigate Klakring, it said.
The Pentagon declined comment on when the next convoy operation, expected to involve four Kuwaiti tankers that have already been loaded with oil, would begin.
In another development, the Pentagon announced that it is drawing all U.S. military units operating in and around the Persian Gulf under a new Joint Task Force Middle East and installing a two-star Navy admiral as the on-scene commander.
