SEAL BEACH : Bill to Clear Bike Paths Advances to Governor

Motorists aren’t the only ones who encounter traffic obstacles. In Seal Beach, officials said, riders in bicycle lanes occasionally must dodge parked cars and even an occasional surfboard or wet suit.
To clear the lanes for bicycle enthusiasts, the state Senate Thursday sent to the governor a bill that makes it a crime to block bicycle paths.
State Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach) said she introduced the legislation, approved 38 to 0 on the Senate’s consent calendar, at the request of Seal Beach officials, who complained that police lacked sufficient enforcement powers.
The measure makes blocking a bike path a misdemeanor punishable by fine or jail term.
